Yared Nuguse is the American indoor record holder for the 1500 meters, one mile and 3000 meters.
Yared Nuguse, a 23-year-old Ethiopian-American runner, broke the indoor 3,000-meter American record on February 11, 2023 at the Millrose Games in New York City. He ran 3:47.38, beating the previous record of 3:49.89 by Bernard Lagat in 2005. He also chased the world record of 3:47.01 set by Yomif Kejelcha in 2019, but fell short by two and a half seconds. Nuguse, who won the NCAA 1500-meter title in 2019 and made the Olympic team in 2021, had a successful college career at Notre Dame. He also won the NCAA 3,000-meter title in 2021 and set a collegiate record in the same event. He is coached by On Athletics Club and is one of the best in the world.
Yared qualified for the 1500m at the postponed 2020 Tokyo Olympics by finishing third at the U.S. Olympic Trials with his personal best time of 3:34.68, but did not participate in the Games due to a quad injury.
His parents are immigrants from Ethiopia who moved to Louisville around 2007 and own a liquor store.
